![]() Perhaps the most subjective category but generally answering a few questions leads me to the rating. ![]() Overall Gameplay General "fun" of the core game. To provide a level of perspective to the ratings provided and to be fair to the developers and publishers because my rating holds little value if I am not the target demographic. Despite its stumbles, though, Riftbreaker proves to be a satisyfing and addictive experience.ĥ0% PCTarget Audience: No Overall Gameplay: 5 Art, Aesthetics, & Accessibility: 8 Graphic Effects: 7 Graphics: 7 Sound Effects: 7 Autonomy of Pace: 4P Ease to Understand Mechanics: 3 Level of Stress: 6 Target Audience Do I typically enjoy these types of games? Yes, no, or maybe/not sure. Furthermore, many of the short-range defense towers are essentially useless, as enemies catapult these to smithereens before they even have a chance to fire. ![]() Players will find it hard to ascertain the relative strength of the alien invasions - some of the "strong" attacks feel weaker than the routine ones - and only by trial and error do you know if you're prepared for the upcoming attack. Riftbreaker's fights are fun, but this is also the area with the biggest issues. So you have to come back from time to time just to sell the original and make a new one two squares to the side. And if your mine is lucky to survive, it stops working after a while because the ore directly underneath has been exhausted, even if there's still plenty left in that immediate vicinity. As the resources being to run out in the mid-game, you find yourself scouring each map for the right lodes, putting down an several structures to support it, and then praying that the rampaging alien army doesn't spawn that-a-way. Its mining mechanics, such a big part of the game, is perhaps the most problematic. Indeed, it comes with a myriad of technical issues, ranging from UI bugs to a crash-to-desktop error when there were numerous enemies on the map. This in itself is testament to the fine balance that the developers have managed to construct here. The many epic battles are the highlight of the game, and the hardest encounters can only be beaten through a combination of a strong economy, strategically-placed defenses and hectic action RPG-style shoot-em-up. Landing on new lands, setting up bases, and building it up to become Fortress Maximus can be incredibly satisfying, even if your supposed bastion collapses rather easily when facing the first horde of giant ballista insects. 80% PCThe genre-melding Riftbreaker is better than it has any right to be.
